About the Jeweler ... Richard Horan came to Big Sur on the wave of the 60's. Eager to start his career as a multi-media artist, he found materials all around him: clay, redwood and jade. He has worked with all of these materials, making musical instruments, art objects and jewelry.
Every year the locals hunt jade at Jade Cove and Willow Creek. In 1973, Richard was fortunate enough to find a large boulder of gem quality jade. After acquiring sophisticated tools, he began to cut, shape and polish the "hard as steel" Nephrite jade. Moving to Big Sur's South Coast in 1981 brough him closer to the jade deposit. He set up shop, developing a line of jewelry featuring not only Big Sur jade, but jade from around the world. His style is natural, using beach polished pieces crafted into rings, belt buckles, earrings and pendants. The finest qulaity jade is sculpted into one-of-a-kind carvings, and cut and polished for finished pieces. His work can be found in local galleries in the Big Sur area.
